Redesigning your website without tanking your Google rankings
A redesign should grow your traffic, not destroy it. The horror stories almost always come from skipping a few unglamorous steps.
A new website should look better and perform better. But every year, businesses launch a beautiful redesign and then watch their leads fall off a cliff, because the redesign quietly destroyed the SEO that was bringing them traffic. The good news: this is entirely avoidable. It comes down to a few unglamorous steps that an experienced development team never skips.
Map and redirect every old URL
If your page addresses (URLs) change in the redesign. and they often do. you must set up 301 redirects from every old URL to its new equivalent. Skip this and Google drops the rankings you spent years earning, and anyone clicking an old link or search result hits a dead 404 page. A complete redirect map is the single most important technical step in any redesign.
Keep the content and pages that already rank
Before you redesign, find the pages that currently bring you traffic and leads using Search Console and analytics, and make sure that content is preserved and improved. not quietly deleted in the name of a cleaner, simpler site. Plenty of redesigns lose rankings simply because someone removed the very pages Google was sending visitors to.
Protect speed, structure, and metadata
Carry over your title tags, meta descriptions, headings, and structured data, and make sure the new site is at least as fast as the old one. ideally much faster. A redesign that looks gorgeous but loads slowly or strips out SEO fundamentals can easily rank worse than the site it replaced, even though it looks far better.
Launch carefully, then watch closely
Hit your performance and Core Web Vitals targets at launch, submit the new sitemap to Google, and then watch rankings, traffic, and enquiries closely for the first few weeks so you can catch any regression early. Handled this way, a redesign should lift your numbers, not risk them. If you're planning one and want it done without losing rankings, we can help.
