What website design actually involves

Design decides whether a visitor believes you before they have read anything. That judgement happens in a couple of seconds and it is mostly about hierarchy, spacing and typography rather than decoration — which is why a restrained site built on a clear grid consistently outperforms a busier one with more effects. The work is deciding what the page is for and then removing everything that competes with it.

In practice that means designing the mobile layout first, because that is where most of the traffic is and because a design that survives a narrow screen usually improves on a wide one. It means real content in the mockups rather than lorem ipsum, since a layout that only looks right with perfect-length headlines will not survive contact with the actual business. It means the primary action — call, WhatsApp, enquiry form — being reachable without hunting on every screen. And it means designing the states nobody remembers to design: the empty gallery, the long business name, the form error, the slow image. Accessible contrast and sensible tap targets are part of the same discipline; they cost nothing at design time and are expensive to retrofit.
